After getting permission to miss classes at Desmond Middle School, wrestler Christina Contreras-Jaen earned All-American status after finishing second in the national championship March 25.
Contreras-Jaen trained with the SOT Academy in Colorado for the U.S. Marine Corps Girls National Championship in Oklahoma City. She went 3-1 in the tournament with a second place finish.
She missed school to attend the Freestyle Women’s National Championships in Irvine, Texas on May 25.
Contreras-Jaen started a GoFundMe account and raised more than $900 for the trip. Joey’s Tint N Glass also sponsored her for three days. She suffered an injury trying to cut weight, thus had to compete in two weight divisions higher than she normally competes in. She was he youngest and lightest in the bracket.
She went 4-2 in the bracket, beating four state championships to place fifth in the country and is a two-time All-American.
Contreras-Jaen won the California USA State championship last year and will defend her title June 2 at Fresno’s Selland Arena.
She would like to thank Desmond Middle School for making this all possible and everyone who pitched in with their donations to send her to Texas.
