All-Madera Tribune Boys Basketball team
Wendy Alexander/The Madera Tribune Madera South’s Hakeem Primes drives to the hoop. His scoring and rebounding led the Stallions to the Div. III semifinals. He was named The Madera Tribune’s boys basketball Most Valuable Player.
Most Valuable Player
Hakeem Primes
Senior, Guard,
Madera South
All-League: 2nd team All-County/Metro Athletic Conference
Primes was an important part of the Stallions over the last few years he was on the varsity. He was one of those players that did everything well. He was a leader, he could drive to the hoop, hit the 3-pointer and dish. One of the things he had a knack for was reading shots and getting into position for a key rebound. He also excelled during the fourth quarter. In a close game, he wanted to be the one to take the important shots. He was the team leader in scoring and one of the top rebounders This is his second All-Tribune selection. The Team
Junior Segura
Senior, Guard,
Madera South
All-League: CMAC honorable mention
Segura was one of the team’s most lethal shooters. When he was hot, there was nothing a team could do. His high-arcing shots barely made a ripple on the nets. He also drove to the hoop and his tear drop shots were virtually unblockable despite his short stature. Segura was also one of the quickest players on the team and could easily get a steal. Although he didn’t start many games this year, he was a key component to the team’s second group, which outscored opponents’ second team. He is a three-time All-Madera Tribune selection. David Thomas
Senior, Guard,
Madera South
Thomas was another do-it-all guard for head coach Jody Sharp. He provided the attitude for the Stallions. He could hit the 3-pointer and helped run the Stallions offense. Thomas drove to the hoop with ease and put the pressure on Madera South opponents. Amire Green
Senior, Forward,
Madera South
A quiet member of Sharp’s team, Green was an athlete at forward. Most of the time, he was shorter than opposing forwards, but his athletic ability allowed him to battle taller players. He came through with rebounds, including important ones on the offensive board. Christian Aguilar
Junior, Forward,
Madera
With Aguilar’s height many teams sank on him when he roamed outside the 3-point line. That was a mistake and Aguilar made them pay. He was Madera’s biggest 3-point threat. When he made a 3-pointer, it sparked the Coyotes. His quiet demeanor was opposite what he could do from behind the 3-point line. K’Veon Jones
Senior, Guard,
Madera
Jones was one of those players that could drive to the lane with ease. With his height and speed, Jones forced teams to honor the drive and he was able to either continue the drive to the hoop or dish out to Aguilar on the perimeter. This is Jones’ second All-Tribune selection this year. He was a member of the All-Tribune football team.
Roy Afonin
Senior, Guard,
Liberty
All-league: 2nd team All-North Sequoia League
Afonin was the team leader for the Hawks. He was one of those players that could drop 30 points on any opponent. Adept at the 3-pointer, Afonin was also dangerous driving the lane. He contorted his body to, not only make contact, but draw a foul for the 3-point play.
