Free smog repair set for Saturday

Valley Clean Air Now and San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District will host a free Tune In and Tune Up event at the pit lot of Madera District Fairgrounds from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday.

The car clean-up event will feature emissions testing, local community booths and free food and beverages (while supplies last) starting at 8 a.m. Participating motorists should expect a two-plus hour wait for an emissions test.

The award-winning vehicle emissions reduction program Tune In and Tune Up helps repair older, out-of-tune gasoline vehicles that are a major impact on air quality throughout the San Joaquin Valley.

At Tune In & Tune Up events, Valley drivers who have had their car for at least six months receive a free vehicle emissions test. If the vehicle doesn’t pass the test, the driver receives a voucher for up to $500 in emission-related repairs at a participating STAR-certified smog check station.

Vehicle models from 1999 or older may also be eligible for up to $9,500 for a down payment on a newer, cleaner car. If they can, owners should bring copies of their two-year registration, two-year proof of car insurance, PG&E bill, MediCal card and the first two pages of their 2016 income tax form.

The Madera District Fairgrounds is at 1850 Cleveland Ave. Visit www.valleycan.org or call 1-800-806-2004 for information on Valley Clean Air Now.
