Madera South High School alumnus vies for FFA award

Madera South High School alumnus Mark Cavallero is one of 16 students selected as a finalist for the National Future Farmers of America (FFA) 2017 America Star Awards.

He is the first person from Madera Unified School District to be chosen as an American Star Farmer finalist.

The application process for the award consists of every state choosing one student to represent them for the American Star Farmer Award. The applications will be judged at the 90th National FFA Convention and Expo in October in Indianapolis. Only four out of the 50 people selected will be chosen to be interviewed at the National FFA Convention and presented on stage in front of more than 50,000 people.

Cavallero graduated from Madera South in 2015 and was chosen as San Joaquin Regional Star Farmer in 2015 and 2016. That meant he had the best Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAE) project in the region, which stretches from Chowchilla to Bakersfield.

His FFA honors include four sectional proficiency awards in 2015 and 2016, two regional proficiency awards in 2015 and 2016, a California State Proficiency Award in 2016 and National Proficiency Finalist in 2016.
