The Madera Coyotes girls swimming team placed third out of 46 teams at the Sunnyside Sprint meet.

“This meet has been around for more than 20 years and we have never placed before,” head coach Erik Baymiller said.

Freshman Tara Goertzen won three events for the Coyotes, including setting meet records in the 25-meter and 50-meter breaststroke. Goertzen was the fourth seed in the 100 individual medley, but beat her personal best by three seconds to win the race. The medley relay team - Jessica Diaz, Lola Gill, Goertzen and Selynna Rosales - placed second and the same four girls placed fourth in the freestyle relay. Gill also placed fourth in the 50-meter backstroke and Rosales was fourth in the 50-meter butterfly.

The Coyotes coaching staff of Madera almuni Baymiller (2006, backstroke), Brandon Ruggeberg (2011, breaststroke), Hannah Ryan (2015, butterfly) and Rick Martines (1995, freestyle), placed second in the 100 coaches medley.
