Stallions volleyball to host golf tourney
First-year Madera South girls volleyball coach Travis McEowen is trying a new way to help raise funds for his team.
The team will host a golf tournament on Aug. 20, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Madera Municipal Golf course. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the $80 entry includes green fees, cart, breakfast burrito, two beverage tickets and a sleeve of golf balls.
“My assistant Justin Van Loon set this up,” McEowen said. “We started playing golf a while back and trying to figure out ways to raise money for the program to get it to be with the best programs. Trying to find something for everyone to have a good time. We’ll see how this first year goes. We got off to a little late start. We’ll learn from this and hope to make it an annual thing.”
McEowen is hoping for a full field and have tee sponsorships for all 18 holes.
“We’re hoping to have about 80 people out there,” McEowen said. “That’s our goal with full sponsorships. We want to have a community day and raise money for our program.”
Early entry is Aug. 13. For information or an entry form, email McEowen at travismceowen@maderausd.org.
“This is my first time doing fundraising and learning as I go,” McEowen said.
McEowen, who coached at Clovis West, is excited for his first season after taking over for Nate Perez.
“It’s new for me and very different from where I grew up,” he said. “Coming up here, it’s been good with a young team. We have some big goals.”
