Girls soccer score goals in bunches

Wendy Alexander/The Madera Tribune Madera South’s Arianna Gallegos (12) celebrates with Yulianna Lomeli (6) after scoring the second of her two goals in Wednesday’s 5-0 victory over Atwater while the Atwater goalkeeper watches. Lomeli got the assist on Gallegos’ goal.

The Madera South Stallions girls soccer team scored four goals in a nine minute span to put away the Atwater Falcons early in a non-conference match in Memorial Stadium.

The Stallions rebounded from a tough loss Tuesday against Garces-Bakersfield that had them seemingly playing against the Rams and the officials with a 5-1 win over Atwater on Wednesday.

“It’s good to have a game to get our confidence level up,” head coach Ramon Delgadillo said. “We changed our formation, we talked about it and changed it for how we are playing and finding the right spot for our girls. It’s a brand-new team, so we’re putting things together.”

The Stallions scored in the 12th minute and added goals in the 15th minute, the 19th minute and the 21st minute for a four-goal lead in the first half. Delgadillo took his foot off the gas until Atwater scored a goal in the second half.

“We told them to continue to play our own game,” Delgadillo said. “You don’t have to do anything with the other team. We need to work on things we need to fix.”

The Stallions play at El Camino Real on Monday and then face Buchanan-Clovis for their first real tests of the season.

“Every game, we are improving,” Delgadillo said. “It’s going to be different than previous years, but we’re building up for our goal.”

In the 12th minute, Itzel Rodriguez got the scoring started. She got the ball in front off a pass from Angelica Gutierrez. Rodriguez shot into the upper right corner for the goal and a 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later, Sabrina Ibrahim found Rachel Ramirez on the left in front of two defenders. Ramirez caught the Atwater goalkeeper on her heels and shot into the right corner for a 2-0 lead. In the 19th minute, Rodriguez sent the ball from the left to the middle for Arianna Gallegos, who knocked the ball on goal. The ball was deflected and rolled into the right corner for the goal.

Two minutes later, Ibrahim intercepted a Atwater goal kick in the middle of the field. She dribbled around three defenders and shot into the upper left corner of the goal for a 4-0 goal lead heading into halftime.

Midway through the second half, Atwater got a free kick and sent the free kick from about 30 yards out over the Madera South goalkeeper’s head under the crossbar for a goal.

Madera South answered seven minutes later. Yulianna Lomeli took the ball to the end line on the left and shot on goal. The ball went off the diving keeper, but Gallegos was there and walked the ball into the net for the 5-1 final score.
