Inside the Game: Madera South 63, Liberty Hawks 27

November 13, 2016

Madera South player of the game: It’s no question who drives the offensive bus for the Stallions. Quarterback Jonah Johnson accounted for 351 yards of total offense against the Hawks. He passed for 233 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown. He was smart with his decision making and led his team to its most complete game of the year.

Liberty player of the game: He has been the backbone ever since leading rusher Christian Baker went down with injury against Washington Union-Easton. Kaleb Roth rushed for 113 yards for his fifth straight 100-plus yard rushing game. He also caught two passes and one came in the end zone. The junior also eclipsed 1,000 yards for the season and officially has 1,050 yards with 13 touchdowns.

Unsung heroes of the game: For a quarterback to have a great day, those around him have to have one too and that’s what Maurice McClain, Jacob Kirkpatrick and Mathew Manoz had. McClain rushed for 177 yards and three touchdowns. He had three carries of 20 or more yards, including an 80-yard touchdown run. Kirkpatrick caught four passes for 106 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown catch. Mathew Manoz caught two passes for 63 yards, but both of those catches were of the highlight variety and resulted in touchdowns.

Play of the game: While leading 35-6 late in the second quarter, the Stallions got a late fumble recovery. Johnson threw a pass that looked to be overthrown, but was actually slightly underthrown. Manoz, running a wheel route, ran down the sideline, made a one-handed catch on the underthrown ball and outran the rest of the Liberty defense for a 56-yard touchdown catch.

Drive of the game: Madera South’s second drive showed glimpses of what was to come. Johnson carried for 16 yards and a first down. Then McClain went around the left side for a 47-yard gain to the three-yard line. Johnson finished the drive with a three-yard touchdown run for the second of six first half touchdowns.
