County holds off City squad

FRESNO — For two Madera Coyotes, it was a reflection of their latest triumph. For three Liberty Hawks and a Madera South Stallion, it was a chance to wear their uniform one last time and have fun at the City/County All-Star softball game.

Led by Liberty Hawks Ana Hayes, Cassidy Santa Cruz and Summer Mendoza, the County team defeated the City team, consisting of Madera’s Emily Chavira and Alyssa Geiger and Madera South’s Summer Sciacqua, 5-4 on Wednesday at Fresno State’s Margie Wright Diamond.

For Chavira and Geiger, it was reliving their last game at Margie Wright Diamond, which was a 4-3 walk-off victory in the Division II Valley Championship game.

“I had a lot less nerves coming into this game,” Chavira said. “It brings back a lot of memories when we won and the fun times we had here. It’s bittersweet wearing this uniform for the last time. I almost cried when I put this on today and (Madera head coach Judy) Shaubach texted us, ‘Good luck.’ This is the last time I’ll wear this jersey and play for her.” ...
