Mitchell scores 1,000th point
With the help of J’Lynn Mitchell’s 22 points, the Matilda Torres Toros girls basketball team easily dispatched the Mendota Aztecs to win their own Cen-Cal Holiday Invitational.
In what is becoming one of the best rivalries among Matilda Torres athletics, the Toros and Aztecs battled for the third year in a row in the Cen-Cal championship game. This year, the Toros outscored Mendota 27-9 in the first half, and cruised for a 46-24 victory Saturday.
Mitchell scored her 1,000th career point Saturday night to become the second Torres player to reach the milestone (Sabrina Cerrillo was the first three years ago). Mitchell led the team with 22 points to go with 16 rebounds. She was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Nevaeh Chavez and Kaylin Perez were also named to the All-Tournament team.
