The Vietnam veteran

Veterans’ Voices is directed toward veterans and their families who have given so much to ensure our freedom in this country. This is an area where you may share your experiences, or read of other veterans’ experiences. We thank you for your service, and hope that you know how much you are loved and appreciated.

The Vietnam war was one of the longest wars, until Afghanistan came along. I had many friends that returned from Afghanistan and got a great homecoming, which they deserve.

I remember when I got off the plane from Vietnam, there were MPs making a line to the airport lobby from the airplane. We could not break out of the line. I was wondering why. Then I heard and saw the men and women spectators yelling, screaming, calling us baby killers. That was one of the most turbulent times in American history.

As a result, Vietnam veterans returned to a homecoming unlike any generation of veterans before or since. Simply put, the “welcome home” wasn’t always welcoming due to opposition toward the war. Whose fault was that? The Veteran?
