Special election for vacant seat

Important information for the qualified electors of Madera City Council District 5, that in accordance with the provisions of the Elections Code of the State of California, a Special Election will be held on November 2, 2021. This Special Election was ordered by the Madera City Council on January 28, 2021 for the purpose of filling the vacancy in Council District Area 5.


Councilmember Santos Garcia was elected Mayor in November 2020, resulting in a vacancy for his position as Councilmember of District 5. The term of office shall be to fill the remainder of the unexpired term, which ends in December 2022.


The following are the filing periods associated with becoming a candidate for the above office:


July 12 to August 6 — Nomination & Declaration of Candidacy Period


September 6 to October 19 — Write-in Candidacy Period


In an effort to limit the spread of COVID-19, the Elections Division will process candidates by appointment only. Candidates are encouraged to download the forms necessary from www.votemadera.com. However, if a candidate is unable to download the documents, a candidate packet can be picked up in the lobby of the Government Center or can be mailed. To request a candidate packet or to schedule an appointment, call the Elections Division at 675-7720.


The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the day of the election. The boundaries of the voting precincts within the county, the location of the vote centers and ballot drop boxes, and the names of the officers selected to conduct the election shall be determined by the Registrar of Voters of Madera County.
