I just filled my car’s gas tank at the service station. If I told that factoid to a millennial (a person born between 1980 and 1996, and currently between 27 and 42 or 43 years of age), she or he would probably be somewhat confused. After all, our modern gas stations don’t provide any service. Perhaps some Gen X people (born between 1965 and 1980) might remember when a service station had a person who pumped gas, checked oil and water, and washed the windshield.
Baby Boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) and The Silent Generation (born between 1928 and 1945) will also remember when the gas station had at least one mechanic and a lift to raise the car so that the undercarriage might be examined. To us oldtimers, it was also a place to get a flat tire repaired and get your Green Stamps which could be used to redeem various items at a participating department store.
