Madera three-sport athlete playing volleyball at York College

While some colleges, particularly those on the West Coast, are silent in athletes, others are going strong like York College in Nebraska.

Last week’s Maderans In College column featured some athletes who have been at the college level. This week’s edition will focus on the “New Kids on the Block,” those athletes who are new on campus.

One of those athletes is former Madera Coyotes’ three-sport standout Sofia Perez, who is playing volleyball for York College and will transition to softball in the spring.

Perez has appeared in three of the Panthers’ matches and has played in 11 games. She has 44 asssists in those three matches to go with 16 digs.

She received playing time in the last two matches. However, because of the York College schedule, she ended her freshman volleyball season. The last two matches were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tara Goertzen (Madera) and the Idaho Vandals swim team will have its first meet of the season over the weekend against Seattle University. The meet will be split into four sessions beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

If there are any other fall sports athletes at a college or an incoming freshman or junior college transfer not on the list, email tylert@maderatribune.net.
