For The Madera Tribune

Brammers Shoe Store promoted its business in the limerick contest of 1916.

“There once was a lady named Mary — Inclined to be very contrary.

Until one day she grew wise — won a limerick prize — Now no longer is Mary contrary.”

With these words, the Madera Mercury proclaimed that the business owners of Madera and the local newspaper had conceived the famous limerick contest of 1916.
