Late surge sends Stallions to championship game

Madera South’s Mayrlin Vasquez tries to get past Torres’ Nevaeh Chavez during Saturday’s championship game. Vasquez earned All-Tournament honors by averaging 8.7 points and 6.3 rebounds over three games for Madera South.

 

After falling behind 22-10 at the end of the first half, the Madera South Stallions girls basketball team used a 22-10 fourth quarter to overtake the Mendota Aztecs to advance to the Cen-Cal Holiday Basketball Tournament championship game on Friday. 


Crystalina Buitron hit two key 3-pointers to get the Stallions back in the game, and Briannah Lorta and Mayrlin Vasquez combined to score 11 points in the fourth quarter to secure the semifinal victory.


The Stallions lost to the Matilda Torres Toros in the championship game on Saturday.
