Celebrants prepare for the official welcome from Oaxaca to a contingent of Maderans who went on a three-week field trip to the city in southern Mexico. Note Superintendent Todd Lile below the hot air balloon.

Seven student-teachers and several administrators from Madera Unified packed their bags and set out on a life-changing odyssey that embraced educators from communities in two countries.

The Madera contingent traveled all night in on Saturday, June 10, and arrived at their destination, Oaxaca, Mexico, at about 4:30 Sunday morning.

The purpose of the trip was to give the student-teachers, designated as “resident teachers,” an opportunity to enrich their journey to become dual-language teachers (not to be confused with bilingual teachers). They were accompanied by several Madera Unified administrators.
