Coyotes run away with tourney win
The Madera Coyotes outscored the Chowchilla Tribe 31-4 in the second and third quarters to run away with a 52-13 victory on the first day of the Madera South Shootout.
The Coyotes had two players score in double figures and had seven players score in Wednesday’s victory over Madera South.
Aaliyah String led the Coyotes in scoring for the second straight game. She scored 17 points and pulled down five rebounds. Ashley Hernandez added 10 points while also recording five rebounds.
Brooke Houghton added nine points to go with seven rebounds.
The Coyotes also won the turnover battle. They forced 22 turnovers in both the first and second half and committed just 15 of their own. String and Hernandez led the Coyotes with seven steals each. Jania Warren recorded six. Of the 44 Tribe turnovers, 26 came by Madera steals.
Chowchilla lost its point guard midway through the second quarter and the Tribe had trouble getting through Madera’s defense. Chowchilla made two free throws with 6:36 left in the second quarter.
The Tribe didn’t score again until there was 14 seconds left in the third quarter. In that time, Madera went on a 29-0 run to open a 46-7 lead.
Chowchilla hit a 3-pointer to take an early lead, but Madera scored the next 10 points with a Houghton jumper, a String layup and 3-pointer, a Houghton jumper and a String free throw.
Hernandez started the second quarter run with a 3-pointer off a hustle play by Ja’niah Lee who dove on the court to keep the ball alive.
String converted a 3-point play after pulling down an defensive rebound. A String steal turned into a Hernandez layup. Then, Hernandez returned the favor with a rebound and a String layup.
Hernandez drove to the hoop and Warren got an assist from Elina Jaramillo for a layup and a 36-7 third quarter lead.
Warren hit Lee for a layup and then hit two jumpers. Jaramillo followed with a 3-pointer for a 28-0 run.
The Coyotes outscored Chowchilla 17-2 in the second quarter and 14-2 in the third quarter.
The Coyotes cruised the rest of the way to record their first victory of the season.
