Madera’s Benji Molina stands up after sliding home to score the game-tying run in the fifth inning of Thursday’s 11-6, eight-inning victory over Madera South. Joel Arellano approaches to help Molina up while Madera South catcher Xavier Cantu watches the action.

Heading into extra innings deadlocked at five against Madera South, Madera Coyotes baseball head coach Andy Underwood knew he had to change things up, so he did.

He called for a drag bunt for No. 3 hitter Eric Wilson. Wilson was successful and that led to a six-run eighth inning that included three more bunts and attempts by two other batters for an 11-5 victory at Mel Parker Field on Thursday.

“Wilson caught them off guard,” Underwood said. “We continued to put the bunt on until they proved they could get us out. There were other opportunities where we failed to execute. With a tie game, we have to try to push runs across. We exploited a couple of holes.”
