Big start leads to new rivalry for Toros

Torres’ J’Lynn Mitchell shoots over Madera’s Aaliyah String with Ashley Hernandez (4) defending during Wednesday’s victory over the Coyotes. Mitchell led the Toros with 10 points.

Matilda Torres Toros girls basketball head coach Jose Villalobos kept telling his team that they didn’t have a rivalry with Madera.

“The talk of the week is we don’t have a rivalry with Madera,” Villalobos said. “There’s no rivalry until we beat them. We were just another team.”

After last year’s overtime loss to the Coyotes, the Toros put to rest any thoughts of who the better team was with a 41-29 victory Wednesday at Torres for the first win over Madera in the program’s history.
