Big second quarter leads Coyotes to rout over Patriots

After a sluggish first period, the Madera Coyotes girls water polo team shut out the Hoover-Fresno Patriots in the second quarter during a 19-7 victory at the McAlister Aquatics Complex.
Madera dominated the second and third quarters, outscoring Hoover 12-2 for the victory.
Isela Obregon led eight different scorers with six goals. Marisol Alvarez added four and Camilla Buenrostro scored three.
A goal from Haley Salas with 36 seconds left in the first period gave the Coyotes a 3-2 first period lead.
Madera started scoring within the first minute of the second period and didn’t slow for the next three minutes.
Buenrostro, on the right side, shot over the goalie inside the far post for a goal 29 seconds ino the second period.
Just 25 seconds later, off a Buenrostro steal, Isela Obregon got the ball on the left. She sent a pass to the middle for an open Kiyana Granados, who shot past the goalie for a goal and a 5-2 lead.
Only 18 seconds later, Obregon got the ball on the left. She got inside her defender and shot by the goalie for the goal.
A minute passed and Madera attacked again. From goalie Katie Ylarregui to Ashlyn Ortega on the left to a pass for Granados up front, the Coyotes scored. Granados shot from point-blank range for a goal.
Obregon scored with 4:19 left in the half for an 8-2 lead. The next four-plus minutes passed without either team getting on the scoreboard.
Alvarez got the scoring started in the second half. With the shot clock running down, she got the ball in front. She lost it, recovered it and pushed it by the goalie for the goal as the shot clock went off for a 9-2 lead.
After a Hoover goal, Jeweliana Obregon got a pass from Alvarez and sent a quick shot on goal for a 10-3 lead.
Salas gave Madera an 11-3 lead with a shot into the upper right corner.
Hoover scored a goal during a man-up situation, but the Coyotes got the goal right back.
Off a Hoover shot clock violation, Maddy Alonzo sent a long pass up front for Celeste Ledesma. Ledesma’s shot went under the crossbar and across the line for the goal and an eight-goal lead.
With 1:40 left in the third, Ledesma sent a pass up front for Alvarez. Alvarez took the ball to the middle and shot inside the near post for the goal.
With a minute left in the third, Salas sent a pass to Alvarez in front. Alvarez worked to her right, cut it back and scored for a 14-4 lead.
Madera put the exclamation point on the third period with a goal with two seconds left. Alonzo sent a pass in front for Alvarez. Her first shot was blocked, but Alvarez got the rebound. She waited for the Hoover defenders’ hands to go down and shot over them for the goal and a 15-4 third quarter lead.
Madera received two goals from Buenrostro, and goals from Ledesma and Isela Obregon in the fourth for the 19-7 victory.
