FRESNO — The Matilda Torres Toros softball team capped off its first-ever foray into the Central Section playoffs with a Div. VI Championship after Friday’s win over Roosevelt.

The fifth-seeded Toros blew the game open with 13 runs in the third inning. However, they had to hold off a six-run fourth and a two run fifth for a 16-9 victory over 10th-seeded, and North Yosemite League foe, Roosevelt at Margie Wright Diamond at Fresno State to win its first championship.

“It took heart, believing, confidence that I knew we could get here. I knew it was going take time, but I know what we’re building here,” head coach Aurelia Gamch said.
