Annual ArtsFest to celebrate art in Madera County

Families are invited to attend the eighth annual Madera County ArtsFest on May 7 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Madera County Superintendent of School building.

This free event will promote art in Madera County in a carnival-type atmosphere. Madera County Schools Foundation and Madera County Superintendent of Schools are hosting the event.

Children will be able to participate in free hands-on art activities consisting of decorating flower pots and paper bags, painting rocks and necklaces, swirling pool paintings, and drawing chalk murals. They will also be encouraged to work with their parents to draw a scene on a puzzle together.

“This is a fantastic event. There are no admission costs and we are happy to provide free make-and-take activities for the community,” said Cecilia Massetti, Madera County Superintendent of Schools. “It’s a fun day to come out with the family and celebrate different types of art.”

The event will feature live art demonstrations and an outdoor performance stage. Ezequiel Tafoya Alvarado Academy’s mariachi band will perform at 11:30 a.m. and Minarets High School show band is scheduled to perform on the outdoor stage beginning at noon.

Free snow cones and popcorn will be provided.

The event will be held in conjunction with a student art gallery. More than 425 students from 32 schools in Madera County competed in an art contest this spring. Artwork from students in kindergarten through high school will be displayed in a student art gallery at the event. Students competed in separate divisions: K-3rd grade, 4th-6th grade, 7th-8th grade, and 9th-12th grade. Pieces were judged in separate categories: 2-dimensional art, 3-dimensional art and still photography.

Students will be awarded ribbons for first, second, third place and honorable mention. All students will receive a certificate of participation. An awards ceremony recognizing all participants will be held at 11 a.m. on the outdoor stage.

Educational Employees Credit Union and Pacific Gas and Electric Company are sponsors of ArtsFest.

The public is invited to attend the event. Door prizes consisting of gift certificates, family outings, and art kits will be awarded. Madera County Superintendent of Schools is located at 1105 S. Madera Avenue. For information, please call Kristi Winter at 662-3873.
