Coyotes make it tougher for Stallions

The Madera South Stallions recorded a 3-0 victory over the Madera Coyotes boys volleyball team to complete the season sweep, but it was a little tighter than the first match-up.
In a March 19 match-up, the Stallions swept the Coyotes by a 75-35 cumulative score. However, on Thursday, the Coyotes battled to close the gap to 75-48 in a three-set loss at Madera South.
Also, in that first match, Madera made mistakes to help the already powerful Stallions to a sweep. In the last meeting, the Coyotes battled back from a first set rout to battle in the final two sets, losing those by a combined 50-38.
Jared Guglielmana led the Stallions with 12 kills. Christian Sylvia controlled the net with 11 kills and four blocks. Setter Adrian Alvarez added five blocks and Javier Maciel put down seven of Madera South’s 37 kills.
Meanwhile, the Coyotes recorded 21 kills with Chandler Fowler the only player with more than five kills with eight.
The Stallions got off to a quick start to open the match. After an Alvarez kill and a Guglielmana side out kill, Joey Chavez served up five straight points. Sylvia recorded a solo block and a kill in the run while Guglielmana put down a kill.
Madera’s Hunter Brown stopped the run with a tip kill.
Alvarez served up an ace to get the lead to seven and Sebastian Moreno put down a soft kill while Guglielmana served an ace to open the lead to nine.
Despite two Madera South service errors, the Stallions got side out kills from Sylvia and Maciel. With Dylan Montoya serving, Madera made two errors and Moreno put down a kill for a 17-5 lead.
Maciel put down two kills before Fowler put down a side out kill. Sylvia recorded a solo block while Madera’s Alex Olvera-Gil put down a side out kill.
Sylvia got the side out with a bump kill to extend the lead to 22-8. After a Madera out of bounds hit, Sylvia put down a kill to get to set point.
Madera South missed its next serve and Ayden Orlando served up an ace for the Coyotes. However, he missed his next serve for a 25-10 Madera South victory.
Madera South jumped out to the early lead in the second set with a Guglielmana kill and an Alvarez solo block. After a Fowler side out kill, Alvarez returned the favor with a side out kill of his own. Alvarez then teamed with Sylvia on a dual block for a 5-1 lead before a Fowler side out kill.
After a Madera missed serve, Alvarez served up five straight points. Guglielmana put down two kills in the run while Jose Villafan added one and Alvarez served up an ace for an 11-2 lead.
Guglielmana and Madera’s Bryson Smith traded side out kills and Orlando served up a point.
Maciel put back a Madera hit and added two kills for a 17-6 lead before a Fowler side out kill.
Guglielmana and Fowler traded side out kills and Alvarez combined with Sylvia for a dual block.
After Madera South was called for getting out of rotation, Brown served up three straight points, including an ace. Smith added to the run with a kill to cut the lead to 20-14.
Sylvia stopped the run with a kill, but Madera South hit out of bounds for a side out. Orlando served up a point to keep the lead at five before a Sylvia side out kill.
Isaiah Martinez served up a point to cut the lead to four, but Maciel put down a kill for the side out.
Alvarez recorded a solo block to get to set point and Moreno ended the set with a kill for a 25-18 victory.
With a little confidence from the second set, the Coyotes battled tough in the third set.
Guglielmana put down two early side out kills and Sylvia added another. However, Brown and Olvera-Gil put down side out kills. Olvera-Gil blocked a Stallions’ attack to tie the set at four before Sylvia got a side out kill and a solo block.
Olvera-Gil put down a side out kill to stay within one. A missed serve gave the Stallions side out and Sylvia served up three straight points, including an ace. Guglielmana and Moreno put down kills in the run for a 10-5 lead.
Noel Luviano-Duque put down a side out kill for the Coyotes and Fowler added a kill to cut the lead to two.
However, a Moreno ace extended the lead to six before a Fowler side out kill. After a Olvera-Gil side out kill, Orlando sent back a Stallions’ attack to cut the lead to 15-11.
Sylvia put down two side out kills and Guglielmana added another for an 18-13 lead before a Smith kill. Maciel added a solo block for a six-point lead.
After Madera South hit out of bounds for side out, Daniel Barriga served up three straight points, including a Brown kill to cut the lead to 19-17.
A missed serve and a Maciel and Alvarez dual block opened Madera South’s lead back to four.
Luviano-Duque put down a side out kill to cut the lead to three. However, Moreno dumped a kill and Gugliemana slammed one down to open the lead to five.
Fowler got the side out with a kill, but Guglielmana got it right back for match point. Madera South hit into the net to give the Coyotes the side out, but Sylvia ended the match with a kill for a 25-20 victory.
