Stallions wins; Liberty gets historic victory

The Madera South Stallions wrestling team initially opened the County/Metro Athletic Conference dual meet season on Dec. 18 and finally battled in its second match this week.

The Stallions received four forfeit victories and recorded five pins in six contested matches for a 60-17 victory Wednesday over the Edison-Fresno Tigers.

Jonathan Spraggins (108 pounds), Damion Sheriff (113), Ricardo Rivera (120) and Jaime Garcia (126) each received forfeit victories.

The Tigers received forfeit victories at 220 pounds and 285 pounds and a pin at 132 pounds.

Ryan Yrigollen pinned his 132 pound opponent in the second round. At 145 pounds, Giovanni Ortiz dominated his opponent, taking a 10-3 lead before recording a pin.

Joseph Munoz, at 152 pounds, also jumped out to a 6-2 lead efore he got a pin.

Victor Wren got a quick pin in the 160-pound match, as well as Tayte Grantham in the 170-pound match.

For the first time in school history, according to Liberty wrestling coach Jay Pumarejo, the Hawks wrestling team defeated the Kerman Lions and did it in a rout.

The Hawks recorded 10 pins in 14 matches Wednesday evening for a 63-11 victory.

Anthony Salas (134), Jarrod Dotson (140), Connor Hiatt (147), Diego Rojas (154), Gio Burgess (162), Chris Imirian (170), Sam Rauschenberg (184) and Francisco Rojas (287) recorded pins against the Lions. Ryan Avila, at 132 pounds, won by a 14-10 decision.

The Hawks came back later in the evening to defeat the Yosemite Badgers 66-10 in a dual meet.
