Inside the Game - Chowchilla Redskins 49, Madera South 7
Players of the game: The Madera South offense has been explosive at times, scoring 40 or more points in each of their victories. They had just defeated Liberty 63-21 to advance to face Chowchilla. However, the Chowchilla defense stymied the Hawks. They limited Madera South’s high-flying offense, which gained more than 500 yards in the previous two games, to just 183 yards of offense and forced four turnovers, of which three were turned into touchdowns.
Unsung hero of the game: Mathew Manoz does so much for the Stallions on both offense and defense that he may sometimes get overlooked. Manoz plays linebacker on defense and carries the ball on offense. Midway through the second quarter, Manoz was laid out by a backside block. He suffered a concussion and his absence was felt on both sides of the ball.
Play of the game: After forcing Chowchilla to punt on its second possession of the game, the Stallions moved the ball after Jonah Johnson 20-yard run. However, on second-and-13 from the Stallions’ 31, Madera South fumbled and Chowchilla recovered. The Redskins scored on the next play for a 14-0 lead with three minutes left in the game.
Drive of the game: The Madera South offense was stagnant the entire game. Near the end of the fourth quarter, the Stallions moved the ball. Johnson gained 19 on a run. Johnson then gained 22 yards to get to the Chowchilla four-yard line. Johnson scored on the next play for Madera South’s lone score of the game.
