Former Stallion named Player of the Week for UC Merced

Former Madera South girls volleyball player Dominique Andrews is enjoying a record-setting junior season with the UC Merced Bobcats.
Former Madera South girls volleyball standout Dominique Andrews was named the California Pacific Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 7.
Andrews was named the conference’s Player of the Week after leading UC Merced with 22 kills in a five-set match against Pacific Union. She is the first player in Cal Pac history to record 22 kills in multiple matches in a season. In addition, UC Merced teammate’s Jaysonna Johnson and Hannah Castillo were named as players of the week marking the first time in school history the Bobcats have swept the league’s weekly honors.
Andrews recorded a team-high 19 kills in a five set victory over Antelope Valley on Oct. 12 to break the school record for consecutive double-digit kill matches. She led the team in her 10th straight double-digit kill match. She followed that with 17 kills in a three-set victory over Providence Christian College on Oct. 13.
Andrews is ranked fourth in UC Merced women’s volleyball history with 587 kills this season. She is 21 kills away from third and 69 from second place all time. She is third in the CalPac with 3.4 kills per set ad 238 league kills.
Miguel Villar (Madera South) was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s Runner of the Week for Adams State University. Female teammate Sadie Baker was the RMAC’s Female Runner of the Week, the second time Adams State swept the award in three weeks.
Villar led the Grizzlies at the Fort Hays State Tiger Open with an eighth place finish in a time of 25:17.5. The Adams State Grizzlies are the No. 1 ranked team in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association rankings, announced Wednesday.
UC Merced’s Adrian Alvarez (Madera South) ran the 8K race at the Mustang Invitational on Sept. 29. He finished the race in 26:55 to place 58th and fifth on the team.
Karina Martinez (Madera South) broke her 5K personal record at the Mustang Invitational for UC Merced. She finished with a time of 19:19 to place 50th in the race and led the team to a 15th place finish. She broke her personal record by 16 seconds.
New tight end Markie Brandt (Liberty) has two catches for 20 yards this season after moving from quarterback to tight end this season.
Minot College receiver Kris Bueno (Madera) has played in all seven games this season for the Beavers. He has seven receptions for 41 yards this season.
Liberty University quarterback Vincent Espinoza (Madera) has led the Lions as their starting quarterback. He is 110-of-213 for 1,513 yards this season. He has thrown 12 touchdowns passes against seven interceptions. He has also punted seven times this season. In his last game, against Chowan Collage, he was 20-of-35 for 264 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
The Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds cross country team completed its regular season on Oct. 13 at the Bronco Invitational, hosted by Santa Clara. Freshman Seth Garcia (Madera South) placed fifth on the team with a 61st place finish to help the Sunbirds to a ninth place team finish. Fellow freshman Veronica Ortega (Madera South) also placed fifth for the women’s team, who were 11th overall.
Fresno Pacific women’s soccer player Anissia Gonzalez (Madera) has scored two goals this season and assisted on two others. She assisted on a goal in a 3-1 win over Notre Dame de Namur on Oct. 12 and scored a goal in a 5-0 victory over Holy Names on Oct. 4.
Pacific University cross country runner Jasmine Gonzalez (Madera) set a new personal and school record by finishing the 6,000 meter course at the Bronco Invitational in 21:12.7. She placed 33rd in the race.
Nicholas Hernandez (Madera South) finished fourth on the Embry-Riddle cross country team at the UCR Highlander Invitational on Oct. 14. He finished with a time of 25:49 to help Embry-Riddle to their fastest time of the season.
Lalo Herrera (Madera South) helped the Colorado Buffalos to place third at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin on Oct. 13. Herrera placed fourth on the team and finished 31st overall. He improved from 124th at the first split to 44th at the second split and improved 13 more spots at the finish.
Marlen Martinez (Madera South) placed 39th for the Stanislaus State Warriors women’s cross country team at the Bronco Invitational with a time of 25:10.8. She helped the team to a 12th place finish.
Makayla Martinez (Madera South) has started one game and played in eight of the 15 matches for York College on defense. Goalkeeper Cassandra Martinez (Madera South) has started seven of the 15 matches for York.
UC Davis senior Hunter O’Brion (Liberty) has four tackles in three games this year. However, two of his four tackles have been for losses.
Evan Rios (Madera) has made six of nine field goals this season for the Fresno City College Rams. He has also made 16-of-18 point after attempts for a total of 34 points, which leads the team. Rams quarterback Jonah Johnson (Madera South) has appeared in four games for the Rams, going 29-of-41 for 430 yards and six touchdowns without an interception. He also has 20 carries for 106 yards and a touchdown.
Merced College’s Justin Landero (Madera) is seventh on the team with 25 total tackles. He has 12 solo tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. He also has a forced fumble.
College of the Sequoias libero Alexis Carmona (Madera) has played in all 20 matches for the Giants. She has played in every set and leads the team with 282 digs, almost double the total of the second highest total on the team. She also is second on the team with 29 aces.
Mark Davila (Madera South) has started the last two matches for Clovis Community College in goal. He started five matches earlier in the season, but has not allowed a goal in the past two matches. He has allowed just five goals all season. Alex Osuna (Madera South) has a goal and an assist for Clovis in 14 matches this season. George Rocha (Madera) has played in 13 of the 14 matches for Clovis.
Brooke Gill (Madera) and Esmeralda Navarro (Madera South) have played in all 15 matches for Clovis Community College this season. Gill is third on the team with seven goals and is tied for third on the team with 17 points this year. She also has three assists. Navarro, a defender, also has a goal this season.
Raina Wristen (Liberty) is enjoying her sophomore season at Fresno City College. She leads the team with 17 goals and 10 assists for a team-leading 44 points. She also has two game-winning goals.
