Madera boxer ready for chance

Wendy Alexander/The Madera Tribune Madera boxer Jesus Sanchez gets is ready for his pay-per-view fight tonight on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez vs. Julio Caesar Chavez Jr. in Las Vegas.

With an opportunity of a lifetime, Madera boxer Jesus Sanchez is ready for tonight’s bout in the Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Sanchez originally got his start with Jesse Renteria, but moved to Rudy Aguero’s Chief Cornerstone gym, which is part of the Good News Ministries church.

“He’s a local kid,” Aguero said. “He’s the average, blue-collar working guy.”

Sanchez is 1-1-2 in his three-year professional career and his only loss came to a boxer that was 20 pounds bigger than Sanchez.

“He has been working for me for about eight months,” Aguero said. “We got the call April 26 night to fight in the undercard. This is an opportunity of a lifetime, so we took it.”

Sanchez has been training with Aruero for the last eight months. He went to a camp in April where he opened some eyes and stayed in shape ready to fight.

“It kind of fell into our lap,” Aguero said. “If he wins, there’s a good chance he could get a contract. This is kind of our shot. It’s tough around this area to get promoted, unless you’re (Olympic boxer) Jose Ramirez. We’re going to go for it and see what happens.”

Sanchez and the rest of the Canelo/Chavez fight can be seen on pay-per-view tonight.
