Methodists to host Rise Against Hunger event

Madera United Methodist Church will host a meal packaging event on Saturday, May 14, through an organization called Rise Against Hunger. The is the third time this church has held this event, and it is both fun and helpful in the fight against the hunger of the world.

The event will begin at 10 a.m., and volunteers will be assigned to stations to help with the packaging of the food. Each package of food contains rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix, including 20 essential vitamins and minerals.

These meal packages are shipped around the world to support school feeding programs and crisis relief. The food has a shelf-life of two years. Each package of food is identical in weight and contents, so the volunteers are instructed on what to do to make each package the same. There are scales, to weigh the packages, bins of different foods, runners, and other volunteer needs during the process.

This event needs 60-80 volunteers. Funds to purchase contents and packaging are raised through donations directly to Madera United Methodist Church, with a designation “Rise Against Hunger.” Donations can also be made through the Rise Against Hunger website.

The fundraising goal for this event is $7,633.44, and currently more than half of the funds have been raised.
