Glacier High School Charter wins Academic Decathlon

In a battle of wits, Glacier High School Charter-Oakhurst, triumphed over their rivals making them the champions of the 40th Madera County Academic Decathlon.

Glacier earned a score of 28,824.9 and will advance to the California Academic Decathlon and compete against the best teams in the state in mid-March.

Seven schools competed on Feb 5 in the 10-event competition answering questions based on the topic, “Water: A Most Essential Resource.”

“We are proud of all of our student decathletes for changing their plans and participating virtually this year. Their dedication and determination to succeed is inspiring,” said Dr. Cecilia Massetti, Madera County Superintendent of Schools.

Liberty High School came in second place and Madera South High School placed third. Chawanakee Academy Charter, Chowchilla Union High School, Madera High School and Matilda Torres High School also competed in the competition.

Decathlon teams are comprised of up to 25 members competing in three levels of competition: Honor, Scholastic, and Varsity students. Competition levels are based on the students’ grade point average.

Liberty High School won the Super Quiz competition. The Super Quiz was held through Zoom this year. Students competed from their campus and connected to Zoom while Dr. Massetti read the questions.

Family, friends and supporters were invited to watch the Super Quiz live on YouTube.

All tests were held online, including the speech and interview competitions. Community members volunteered to judge this year’s competition via Zoom. Students entered individual breakout rooms and delivered speeches and interviewed for competition.

A total of 118 medals were handed out at the awards ceremony.

Chawanakee Academy Charter received a total of nine medals: 1 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze. Chowchilla Union High received seven medals: 2 gold and 5 bronze. Glacier High Charter received 34 medals: 18 gold, 10 silver and 6 bronze. Liberty High was awarded 42 medals: 7 gold, 18 silver and 17 bronze. Madera South High received 23 medals: 6 gold, 8 silver and 9 bronze. Matilda Torres High School received 3 medals: 2 silver and 1 bronze.

Cole Muraszewski, a senior from Glacier High School Charter, was the top scoring decathlete, scoring 6,146.4 points out of 10,000 across the 10 events. He received the EECU Outstanding Scholar Award of $500.

The top scoring senior from each school will receive a Pacific Gas and Electric Top Senior Scholarship for $250. The following students earned the honors: Chawanakee — Winston Samuelson; Chowchilla — Jennifer Hernandez-Penafiel; Glacier High School Charter — Cole Muraszewski; Liberty High School — Izaya Blancett; Madera South High School — Syan Chavira.

The Glacier High team members who will be participating in the state competition, led by coach Bruce Boe are: Honors Division- Cole Muraszewski, Eli Lockwood, Yevgeny Beams; Scholastic Division- Damien Cunningham; Elijah Mills, Brian Sadler; Varsity Division- Cloe Reed, Corban Stanford.

“We wish the Glacier High team the best of luck at the state competition,” said Dr. Massetti.

The Madera County Academic Decathlon is funded by donations from local businesses and community members. The Madera County Schools Foundation proudly supports the event.
