Coyotes volleyball falls in five at home

The Madera Coyotes boys volleyball team looked to have turned the corner in its non-conference match with the Hoover Patriots, but fell back in a 3-2 loss.


The Coyotes had a commanding 25-16 victory in the fourth set to tie the set at two. However, multiple errors led to a 15-5 loss in the fifth set in Joe Flores Gym.


Madera had four hitters with five or more kills. Angel Leon led the Coyotes with 14 kills and Jaden Gaeta had 10 kills. Ayden Orlando and Damian Bispham recorded five kills each.


The Coyotes fell behind quickly in the first set, 5-2. Kills from Gaeta and Bispham cut the lead down to one. However, the Patriots scored three straight points for an 11-7 lead and extended the lead to 15-6.


Despite side out kills from Gaeta, Leon and Orlando, the Patriots extended their lead to 23-15.


Madera got a bump kill from Diego Barriga to cut the lead to five. However, a missed serve gave the Patriots set point and an ace ended the set, 25-18.


Madera scored the first two points of the second set with a Barriga ace and a Gaeta kill. Leonel Marquez served up two points and Kelvyn DeLeon served up five more points with the help of a Bispham tip kill, a Leon kill and an Orlando kill on a down ball from the back row for a 12-4 lead.


Hoover got the side out and scored three straight points cut the lead to four. The Coyotes got a kill from Leon and a solo block from Michael Cunningham for a 16-11 lead.


After a Hoover missed serve, Gaeta got a kill inside the back line and Joshua Landeros served up two points for a 20-12 lead.


Hoover scored three points after a missed serve before Orlando recorded a side out kill on a quick. Hoover got the side out back and scored two more points before a Bispham side out gave the Coyotes a 22-18 lead.


After a trade in side outs, Orlando served up a point to get to set point. After Hoover got the side out, Leon put down a kill for the set win, 25-20.


Hoover opened the third set with a 4-1 lead and then scored four straight points for an 11-4 lead.


After a Hoover missed serve, DeLeon served up four straight points with a Bispham solo block and a Leon kill to cut the lead to 11-9.


However, the Patriots scored four straight points to extend their lead.


Leon put down a kill for a side out, but the Patriots got a kill for the side out. Hoover then scored five straight points for a 21-10 lead.


Leon put down a side out kill, but Madera missed its next serve. Leon put down another kill and Barriga served up a point.


However, the Patriots closed the set by scoring three of the next four points for a 25-14 victory.


Madera jumped to a 5-1 lead in the fourth set behind a solo block and kill from Gaeta. Gaeta put down another kill for a 7-2 lead.


Gaeta served up a pair of aces for a 10-4 lead. After a side out kill from Leon, Cunningham put down a kill and Bispham added another for a 14-5 lead.


Hoover scored two points, but Leon put down a tip kill for a side out and combined with Marquez for a block for a 16-7 lead.


After a Hoover missed serve, the Patriouts couldn’t find the court and hit out of bounds on the next two points. Marquez put down a kill for a 21-10 Coyote lead.


Madera hit out of bounds and then hit the ball into the net on three straight points. After head coach Rhonda Jefferson-Counsel called a time out, Marquez put down a side out kill to stop the run.


Hoover got the side out, but Bispham put down a side out kill. After Hoover got the side out, again, Bispham and Orlando combined for a block to get to set point. Leon ended the set with a kill to tie the match at two.


Hoover scored six of the first seven points with all six as a result of a Madera error.


Gaeta put down a kill, but Madera hit the ball into the net and let the ball fall for an 8-2 Hoover lead.


Hoover missed its next serve and DeLeon served up a point. However, Madera gave the serve back with an over violation.


After a Leon side out kill, Madera missed its next serve. More mistakes followed. They allowed a ball to fall, hit out of bounds and hit into the net for a 13-5 lead.


Hoover recorded a dump kill to get to match point and finished the match with a kill for a 3-2 win.
