Madera County Chief Administrator Jay Varney.

Madera County’s chief administrator, Jay Varney announced his retirement, punctuating a decorated career of public service for over four decades. 


Varney, who also served as Madera County Sheriff from 2014 to 2020, was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to serve as the Chief Administrative Officer five years ago. His retirement date is set for September. 


“CAO Varney stepped into leadership during one of the most challenging times in our County’s history, guiding us through COVID, difficult budgets, and multiple disasters with integrity, humility, and unwavering dedication,” said Madera County Supervisor Chairperson Leticia Gonzalez. “His leadership was marked by trust, fairness, and a true commitment to the people he served. He will be greatly missed, and we wish him nothing but joy, good health, and well-earned rest as he begins this next chapter in retirement.”
