Drunk driving suspected as cause in 4-car pileup

An overturned Honda SUV sits in a driveway near the 2400 block of Sunset Avenue early Saturday morning after being struck at a high rate of speed by a driver police allege was DUI and twice the legal limit for alcohol.
A driver whose blood alcohol level was allegedly twice the legal limit caused a multi vehicle crash on Sunset Avenue early Saturday morning, according to the Madera Police Department.
Officers said that Jaime Anguiano, 32, of Madera was westbound on Sunset Avenue at a high rate of speed in a newer Toyota Camry sedan when he lost control near Mainberry Drive and struck a parked Honda SUV, spun into both curbs and across all four lanes, striking another parked car, before ending up in a driveway in the 2400 block of Sunset and damaging a parked Chevrolet.
Anguiano sustained minor injuries in the high speed collision, according to Sgt. Mark Trukki.
“The collision happened about 2:20 am and closed Sunset until about 6:30 am,” Trukki said, until officers were able to sort out the damage and all the details of the chaotic, multi-vehicle crash scene that spread over a half a block.
Many residents who were awakened by the crash, sirens, tow trucks and other commotion stood around watching, trying to determine what had just happened right outside their doors. Broken parts of the three wrecked vehicles were scattered over the roadway and into front yards.
Trukki said alcohol and reckless driving do not mix, and it was surprising that no one other than Anguiano sustained any injuries in the high-speed pileup.
Anguiano was taken to Madera Community Hospital for treatment of a laceration, and was cited for misdemeanor DUI and driving without a license. He later was released.
