Poythress, Guzman leads FPU at Stanford


Courtesy of Fresno Pacific University Fresno Pacific University cross country runner Ann Poythress (Madera) helped the Panthers to a 10th place finish at the Stanford Invitational on Oct. 1.

 

Ann Poythress (Madera), running for Fresno Pacific, finished 35th overall at the Stanford Invitational on Oct. 1 and was second on the team, which finished 10th. Ismael Guzman (Madera South) was 85th overall for the Sunbirds for second on the men’s team in a 14th place finish.

Also at the Stanford Invitational, UC Merced’s Angelica Costilla (Madera South) finished third on the team in an 18th place team finish.

In a five-set loss to Providence Christian College on Oct. 7, UC Merced womens’ volleyball player Dominique Andrews (Madera south) recorded nine kills with four blocks. Against La Sierra on Oct. 8, Andrews recorded a career-high 15 kills in a five-set win. She also had two digs and two blocks.

In a four set loss to San Diego State on Oct. 6, Brielle Hefner (Madera) was second on the Fresno State women’s volleyball team with seven kills. She added three solo blocks and two aces. Two days later, against Nevada, Hefner recorded six kills in a five-set loss.

Holy Names University cross country runner Juan Macias (Madera South) was sixth on the team to help the Hawks to a second place finish Oct. 1 at the Sonoma State Invitational. Macias finished 16th overall.

Lilly Martinez (Madera South) recorded three kills with two digs in a three-set loss to Grand View on Tuesday for the William Penn women’s volleyball team.

Marcus McCoy (Madera South) recorded six tackles, five solo, for Upper Iowa in a 59-41 loss on Oct. 1. He was second on the team in an Oct. 8 loss to Winona State with seven tackles. He had six solo tackles, a tackle for loss and two pass breakups.

In a 42-7 victory over winless Cabrillo College, West Hills College quarterback Vincent Espinoza (Madera) was 6-of-12 for 85 yards and threw a touchdown. He also had five rushes for 16 yards and scored another touchdown.

Cristian Ceja (Madera) caught two passes for 22 yards in Merced College’s 27-21 loss to Monterey on Oct. 1.

College of the Sequoias defensive back Logan Pierce (Liberty) recorded two tackles in an Oct. 1 loss to Sacramento City.

In a three set win over West Hills College, Merced College women’s volleyball player Kinsey Kerby (Madera) had two kills with two digs and a block.

Fresno City College women’s soccer player Leila Monzon (Madera South) scored a goal in a 2-0 victory over Bakersfield on Oct. 4. Madera South teammates Sophia Zertuche and Jasmine Garibay started. Madera teammates Juliet Trembley and Oksana Reynoso also received playing time. In an Oct. 7 match against Clovis, Garibay assisted Zertuche for a goal in a 2-0 victory. On Tuesday, Trembley scored two goals, one was assisted by Garibay, in a 4-0 victory over West Hills Lemoore.
