Nearly 300 Fresno homes test positive for lead in water

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Nearly 300 Fresno homes have lead in the water pouring out of their faucets, with nearly 120 of those homes having lead levels exceeding federal limits.

Lab results released Tuesday come after testing prompted by rust-colored water coming out of more than 1,500 homes' faucets. The discoloration complaints took on greater urgency after testing revealed the presence of lead in the water in some homes.

Tuesday's testing summary indicates that lead has been detected in at least one faucet in 119 homes at levels of 15 parts per billion or higher, meaning it is above the acceptable level set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Another 167 homes are showing lead below the action level.

In all, almost 2,000 fixtures have been tested for lead.
