The Triumph Volleyball Academy held its third annual Beach Cup at the Landon Courts in Madera last week and lost to Roy’s Legends, 2-1.
“We usually have four sand camps get together and compete with teams from other high schools,” TVA coordinator Steve Guglielmana said. “Some of the clubs have mixed schedules. We also couldn’t have a tournament with the girls because of conflicts with schedules.”
Roy’s Legends consisted mostly of Bullard High School-Fresno volleyball players and one Madera High player (Devonte Orlando).
The teams were able to play six matches — three on the ‘A’ team and three on the ‘B’ team (like a junior varsity).
The TVA team of Javier Gill and Jael Lopez won TVA’s lone match on Thursday.
The six TVA teams included Larry Casarrubias and Abraham Alapizco; Carlos Hernandez and Fernando Ruiz; Jared Guglielmana and Christian Sylvia; Ruben Jaimes and Jose Arredondo; and Omar Arredondo and Alan Herrera.
TVA will conclude its summer season with an Endless Summer tournament on Aug. 20 at the Landon Courts, 7177, Road 29 1/2. There will be three divisions — fifth/sixth grade; middle school and high school; and adult reverse coed (played on a 10-foot net and men cannot block or spike). The cost is $10 for the fifth/sixth grade teams; $20 for the middle school and high school teams and $40 for the adult teams. Register the day of the event, beginning at 9:30 p.m.
“Winners receive a medal and a shirt,” Guglielmana said. “If there are more than six teams in their division, they also win a trophy ball.”
Guglielmana also hosted a Fellowship of Christian Athletes sand volleyball camp on July 18-21. “We had 70 kids for our camp,” he said. “It consisted of players, but also had players from Fresno State, including Madera’s Brielle Hefner.”
Also attending the camp were Taylor Slover, a Fresno State player, new Madera South girls volleyball coach Tavis McEowen, in addition to members of the boys volleyball staff, including Taylor Beakes and Ron Nelson from FCA.
