Authorities find missing hiker's body in canal
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say they have found the body of a missing 74-year-old hiker in a California canal.
The Fresno County Sheriff's Office says Robert Simonian went missing Monday after leaving his Barstow home for a hike. He carried a weighted backpack as a part of his hiking training exercise.
Simonian's family says it was not uncommon for him to hike along the canal.
The family called the sheriff's office when Simonian hadn't returned after three hours and they were not able to contact him on his cellphone.
Dive teams found Simonian in the canal Tuesday within 10 minutes of looking.
The Sheriff's Office says it doesn't know if foul play is involved. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
