The Madera South Stallions girls volleyball team, which sports nine sophomores and juniors on its roster, grew up quickly in a 3-1 victory over the Sunnyside-Fresno Wildcats to open the 2013 season.

The Stallions had to go a little extra to pick up two of three victories, but had enough to pick up the win Thursday. Madera South won the first two sets, 27-25 and 25-19 and dropped the third set 26-24. The two teams went for extra points in the fourth set in a 27-25 Madera South victory to win the match.

“We made it harder on ourselves than it had to be,” head coach Nate Perez said. “I’m glad to get the result. We are going to have to learn from the experience to get better for Thursday.”

The Stallions continue play today at home against Yosemite and then prepare for a Saturday tournament...
