Woman coach excels in male-dominated sport

For the past nine years, Madera High has gone against the norm in regards to its boys volleyball team — its head coach is a woman.

As the lone female boys volleyball coach in the Central Section, head coach Rhonda Jefferson has seen and heard her share of naysayers. However, she is approaching 200 wins leading the volleyball program and holds a place for females, as well.

“When I first started in the Tri-River Athletic Conference, we would have meetings and they would look at me like I didn’t know what I was doing,” she said. “They just didn’t take me seriously. After the third year, after beating Buchanan and knocking them out of the playoffs three years in a row, the respect factor started to come in.”

During her years at Madera, Jefferson has seen her share of female coaches in boys volleyball, but none of them have had staying power...
