For four Liberty Hawk softball players, it was an opportunity to create history that could never be overtaken. Unfortunately, Arizona Pilgrim and the Taft Wildcats had the last say with a 9-3 victory Thursday to win the Div. IV Central Section championship.

Pilgrim tossed a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the victory and hit a two-run home run to start the scoring to lead Taft to the win.

Liberty’s Danni Devine, Bailey Graham, Randi Wallace and Hannah Shevenell were trying to win their fourth softball Valley Championship ring and first in Div. IV, but fell short. For Devine and Wallace, it’s an unfortunate double as they lost in the Div. III soccer Valley championships in the winter.

“This team will leave three championship signs on the fence,” head coach Leslie Wood said. “The girls coming back will be hungry. I think the six seniors, three out of the four years, they were Valley Champions. I am proud of them and I know it hurts for them today. For the future, it will make this group of girls hungry.” ...
