Last season, the Liberty Hawks won the school’s first Division IV Valley Championship.

Since, the team lost four senior starters in Jordan Moineau, Kylee Hoelzel, Taryn Smith and Leisa Horanic, who combined for 14 varsity letters, and head coach Ed Benavente, who led the Hawks to two Valley titles.

Enter Eli Liuba in a changing of the guard, so to speak. Liuba, whose contract wasn’t renewed with Madera High last season after four seasons, was urged to take over the Liberty program by his daughter Julie, a senior on this year’s team, after Benavente decided not to return this season.

Now, Liuba, who lives in the Madera Ranchos, gets to coach at a school that he has always wanted to coach...
