Ticket prices cut for speedway Saturday

Fans of open-wheel racing and three-wide starts are in for a treat this Saturday as the LoanMart Madera Speedway is set to host its Fred Gerhardt Open Wheel Classic, with all ticket prices cut by $5.

The night pays homage to legendary engineer Fred Gerhardt, who helped build winning cars for some of the Central Valley's most prolific racers including Fresno Athletic Hall of Fame driver Billy Vukovich.

In tribute to the classic Indy 500 starts of the duo's heyday, the United States Auto Club/Bay Cities Racing Association (USAC/BCRA) midgets class will roar to life with drivers lined up three-wide, who will then go the distance for 100 laps.

The last time the class came to the track, in only 30 laps, drivers exchanged leads at least six times as they blazed around turns in a furious fight to the finish, eventually won by Cody Gerhardt, grandson of Fred Gerhardt...
