Stallions overcome slow start

The Madera South Stallions kept the Fowler Redcats in the game despite leading by 17 points, but held on Saturday for a 59-47 victory at the Jesse Lujan Jr. Memorial boys basketball tournament Saturday.

Behind three 3-pointers for a 9-0 run to close out the third quarter, the Stallions took a 50-33 lead over the Redcats. However, the Redcats outscored the Stallions 14-9 in the fourth quarter and cut the lead to eight before the Stallions held on to win the tournament’s fifth place game.

“We ran away and let them back because we foul,” head coach Jody Sharp said. “They shot 18 free throws in the first half. If they made most of those — they made six — it would be a different ball game.”

The Stallions made 10 3-pointers, highlighted by three from Jerry Raymond and two from Juwan Cummings, Ruben Rodriguez and Josh Johnson...
