Stallions get set for a run in State Meet

For Madera South seniors Jose Herrera and Uriel Cabanas, there won’t be any deer-in-the-headlights look when the two step on the Veterans Memorial Stadium track to face the state’s best competition at Clovis’ Buchanan High School.

Both Stallions know they belong with the elite runners in the state and have a proven track record to back up that confidence in the CIF State Championships, beginning today.

Herrera — the County/ Metro Athletic Conference champion in the 1,600 Meters and 3,200 Meters — will take on top runners in those events in his first trip to the two-day State Meet.

“This was my whole goal throughout the season,” Herrera said. “I didn’t make it my sophomore or junior years. I was close last year, but fell one place short. It feels like a huge accomplishment to be here and I’m pretty excited.” ...
