Liberty wins big in first official varsity game against Madera South
Led by the defensive play of Cody Sanders, the Liberty Hawks football team shut down the Madera South Stallions 38-0 at Memorial Stadium in the first official varsity matchup between the two Madera County teams.
The Hawks’ defense limited the Stallions (0-2) to 101 yards a week after Madera South’s offense recorded 259 total yards against Kerman in its opener.
Though it was only the second game of the season for last year’s Division V section runner-up Hawks (2-0), Liberty definitely made headway with its play against a Division III school like Madera South of the County/Metro Athletic Conference.
“It’s a huge win for Liberty High School and our kids to be able to come out and beat a bigger school,” Liberty head coach Mike Nolte said. “The kids were physical tonight and that’s what I was hoping for, to match their physical abilities and we did. We played good on defense and our game plan was to obviously stop the run.” ...
