Stallions beat Coyotes in playoff atmosphere

After easily winning the first match, the Madera South Stallions boys volleyball team found themselves battling before coming away with a 3-1 victory to conclude the regular season.

Behind 20 kills from Sebastian Uribe and 10 from Luis Escobar, the Stallions held off the Coyotes late to record a 25-12, 25-23, 24-26, 30-28 victory Thursday night at Madera’s Joe Flores Gym.

With both sides of the gym filled with students and parents, the match seemed more like the first round of the Central Section playoffs, which begin Tuesday.

Coyote leading outside hitter Nate Moreno sat out the first set after receiving a red card on Thursday against Bullard. He put down a team-leading 14 kills in the final three sets. Blake Giersch recorded the team’s only triple-double of the season with 12 digs, 10 kills and 16 assists...
