The Madera South boys distance squad put on quite a display of both talent and depth Wednesday at the Central Section North Area track and field championships.
The top three finishers and the next top six from the three qualifying areas will advance to the section Master’s championships next Saturday at Buchanan-Fresno High.
Junior Jose Herrera paced the Stallions, placing second in a hotly contested 1,600 meters with a time of 4:23.40, a mere two seconds behind Buchanan’s Cody Brazeal. But no one could match the Stallions’ depth as senior Nathan Esparza was less than a second behind Herrera to place third in 4:24.33 while Ismael Guzman crossed the finish line in sixth with a time of 4:24.71
But Herrera and Cabanas were far from done. Herrera won the 3,200 meters with a time of 9:37.68 while Cabanas was second in the 800 meters in 1:56.66...
