Before the Madera South Stallion girls basketball team could blink its eyes, the team was in a big first quarter hole before trying a comeback in a 62-47 loss to the Mendota Aztecs.
The Stallions trailed 23-4 at the end of the first quarter and 29-4 midway through the second quarter. Madera South wouldn’t go away, though, using an 11-0 fourth quarter run to trim Mendota’s lead to 51-47 with four minutes left in Friday’s game.
Unfortunately, the Aztecs closed out the game on an 11-0 run, including six free throws, for the victory.
“We’re just trying to play like we do in practice and that’s what I told them at halftime,” first-year head coach Matt Toews said. “It’s up to them to do it and they did it at times. They definitely know they can do it. It’s a work in progress.”...
