Madera South claims second straight title

Friday, November 06, 2009

With a 3-1 match win over Fresno San Joaquin Memorial, the Madera South Stallion girls volleyball team completed its second straight undefeated North Yosemite League season to win its second straight NYL title.

The Stallions overcame a 25-14 loss in Game 2 to win Game 3, 25-22, and Game 4, 25-20, to improve their record to 20-0 in the NYL in two seasons. Memorial was the only team that could challenge the Stallions. The Stallions entered Thursday's game 9-0 while Memorial was 8-1 in the NYL.

"We had to get back into the game," Madera South's lone senior Shalequa Blanton said. "I kept telling myself we're not going to be co-champs. We played together and I'm so happy we got the win. We were able to stay up and stay in our game after Game 2."

The team's coach worked to ease the tension at that point.
