No matter how the season is going, there's always one constant when it comes to high school football -- the team never should never lose its Homecoming game.
After Stallion fullback Chance Nevarez muscled his way to the end zone with 1:23 left in the game and Fresno quarterback Juan Sanchez was pressured into a fourth down incomplete pass, the previously winless Stallions made sure that didn't happen to them as they celebrated their first ever home win on Homecoming with a 25-21 victory Friday over the Warriors at Memorial Stadium.
The Warriors, who trailed 19-14 heading into the fourth quarter, took a 21-19 lead with 5:15 left in the game as it stunned the Stallion crowd.
Madera South (1-7, 1-2) answered after senior running back Adam Baca had a 15-yard kickoff return to the Warrior 40-yard line. From that spot, the Stallions went 60 yards in four minutes on eight plays and were aided by a 15-yard illegal hit to the head penalty on 6-foot-3, 275-pound defensive tackle Devonte Martin, who was drawn offsides by the cadence of Stallion sophomore quarterback Omar Perez. On the drive, Perez completed a 13-yard pass to Nevarez to get the ball inside the Fresno 6-yard line. On the next play, Nevarez took the ball and powered his way into the end zone to make it 25-21.
